Llanthony in the Brecon Beacons
Tour and Tourist Information Guide
Among the Black Mountains on the Welsh/English border in eastern Wales lies the almost secluded valley of Llanthony. Even today it is a serene and beautiful place, so it is of little wonder that Augustinian Cannons chose to found their community in what was then a wild and lonely place.
Llanthony Priory was one of the earliest houses of Augustinian canons to be founded in Britain, and is one of only a handful in Wales.
It is chiefly famous today for its wild and beautiful setting, far up the Vale of Ewyas in the Black Mountains. It was the priory's remoteness in the Welsh hills which was its undoing, however, making it vulnerable to attack. |

Llanthony
Priory, an extensive monastic ruin, stands in the Black Mountains, eleven miles from Abergavenny. This remarkable old Priory is only accessible by a single narrow lane that runs from Llanvihangel Crucorney over Hay Bluff to Hay-on-Wye. It was built in 1180AD and was one of the great medieval buildings in Wales. Today the ruins of the Priory are open to the public and it’s well worth venturing off the beaten track to find it. There is even a pub at the Priory for weary travellers to refresh themselves.
The peacful and tranquil area enable tourist and travellers to discover the joy of Painting in Llanthony, where the tutors are all practicing artists and experienced teachers. being surrounded by beautiful views, landscape painting courses take place as much as possible outside, near Llanthony Priory, or on Broadley Farm where a studio is situated.
Groups are small to allow for individual tuition. Most art courses and workshops are good for both beginners and the more experienced artist.

Hacking is for small groups of more experienced riders who want to move faster, with more opportunities to canter. Hacking is for people who ride regularly and are confident on a horse. |
